The goal of the Structures Subsystem is to support the mission through the design, analysis, manufacturing, and assembly of the satellite’s external structure and internal mechanical supports. Structures serves as the physical backbone of the spacecraft, providing the interfaces between subsystems and ensuring hardware fits, mounts, and integrates correctly throughout assembly and testing.
Undergraduate researchers gain hands-on experience including CAD design, preparing manufacturing drawings, developing assembly procedures, coordinating with other subsystems during integration, and maintaining key project documentation such as component tracking, material properties, and mass budgets. Structures members also manufacture flight hardware, fixtures, and prototypes using 3D printing as well as manual and CNC machining, then support assembly and fit checks across the spacecraft. Besides learning technical skills, members learn teamwork and communication skills in an environment modeled off modern engineering business practices.
